Understanding mushroom product status in Canada

A plain-language orientation to the difference between a food, a natural health product and an independent transparency claim.

A mushroom ingredient does not determine a product’s regulatory status by itself. Intended use, representation, format and claims all matter. Health Canada regulates natural health products and assesses them before authorizing sale in Canada.

A Natural Product Number is a regulatory identifier for a licensed natural health product. It is not a Mushroom Commons verification and does not make an organization profile ‘verified.’

Food safety, regulatory authorization, organization-profile confirmation and voluntary product transparency answer different questions. They should never be collapsed into one badge.

Check current Health Canada databases and guidance for a specific product. This guide is orientation only and is not legal or medical advice.
