How to assess mushroom product information

Questions that help separate identity, regulatory status, testing and marketing claims.

Start with identity: look for the scientific name, the part or material used, and the ingredient quantity. A common name alone may not resolve the species.

Then check status. If a product is sold as a natural health product in Canada, use Health Canada’s licensed-product resources to inspect its authorization and labelled conditions of use.

Treat a laboratory result as a document about a particular sample and method, not as proof of every claim about a brand or future batch. Check the sample identity, dates, methods and laboratory named on the report.

Be cautious when marketing language moves beyond the evidence shown. Ask what was tested, who reviewed it and whether the claim applies to the finished product.
